Atalanta thought they saw something familiar in the way Lionel Messi swept past Josko Gvardiol in the World Cup semi-final as Argentina beat Croatia 3-0.

La Pulga helped seal the scoreline with a wonderful move, as he slowed and then sped up several times to get Gvardiol dizzy and pull back from the touchline for Julian Alvarez to score.

In a cheeky video, Atalanta claim Josip Ilicic did it first and better, seeing as he didn’t provide the assist in the end, but rather scored from the tightest of angles against Sampdoria.

Funnily enough, Ilicic also beat a 2022 World Cup defender on that run, as Maya Yoshida was representing Japan.
