Italy international Guglielmo Vicario got plenty of praise despite Tottenham’s 4-1 loss against Chelsea on Monday, especially for a superb save on Marc Cucurella.
Spurs lost their first Premier League game on Monday night, suffering a 4-1 loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against City rivals Chelsea, coached by their ex-boss Mauricio Pochettino.
Vicario stole the show despite Tottenham’s defeat with four saves, including one on Cucurella in the second half.
Tottenham had been reduced to nine men following red cards to Cristian Romero and Italy international Destiny Udogie, but Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou still kept a high line, trying to put pressure on Chelsea and win the game.
Vicario is trending on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday morning with over 46,000 mentions.
Fans and pundits in the UK, including Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, have been praising the ex-Empoli goalkeeper who sent a message to Spurs fans after the game.
“Difficult to say anything after that match,” he wrote on Instagram. “Even down to 9 men, we really tried. I’ve never lost 4-1 and have all our fans applauding us like that at the end. Thank you.”
Vicario was called up by Italy coach Luciano Spalletti for games in September and October but has yet to make his senior Azzurri debut.
