Guglielmo Vicario reveals playing for Italy ‘means even more’ to him now that he plays his club football in England with Tottenham Hotspur.

The shot-stopper featured in the 0-0 friendly draw against Turkey at the Stadio Dall’Ara this evening, which was only his second cap for the Nazionale.

“Playing for Italy is always something that gives you great pride, but it means even more to me now that I play my football abroad,” Vicario told RAI Sport.

This was a disappointing goalless stalemate against Vincenzo Montella’s side, as both Italy and Turkey are gearing up towards the EURO 2024 tournament in Germany.

“I think this is just part of the process, it is our first friendly. We have another game tomorrow and then a friendly on Sunday, so we are working to fix what needs fixing.”

Vicario earns second Italy cap

The Azzurri will also face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday, before beginning the EURO 2024 group phase against Albania on June 15, Spain on June 20 and Croatia on June 24.

Vicario has pushed his way up the rankings to become second choice for Italy behind Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint-Germain, largely because Ivan Provedel was out for over a month at Lazio with a sprained ankle.

However, it will take something remarkable for anyone to take the gloves away from Donnarumma.
