Vicario had never played for Italy at any level

Guglielmo Vicario receives his Italy debut this evening against Ecuador, but the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper had never even played at youth level before.

It kicks off at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey at 20.00 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens on the LIVEBLOG.

The entire starting XI has changed from the side that beat Venezuela 2-1 on Thursday, including Vicario in goal.

That means it is the first time since November 16, 2022 that Italy have started with someone other than Gianluigi Donnarumma between the sticks.

On that occasion against Albania, it was Napoli man Alex Meret who held the gloves.

Tonight is also the debut at senior level for Torino winger Raoul Bellanova, but Vicario stands out because he has never represented Italy at any level before.

Now 27 and impressing in the Premier League with Tottenham, Vicario did not get his Serie A debut until Cagliari’s 1-0 defeat to Inter in April 2021, when he was 24 years and six months old.

He really made his mark at Empoli for two seasons, reaching a total 73 Serie A appearances before the transfer to Tottenham for €18.5m in July 2023.

Vicario probably would not have been given this opportunity had Lazio shot-stopper Ivan Provedel not been out with a sprained ankle, as he is battling with Meret for the role of third pick going to Euro 2024.

Curiously, Vicario is one of three Premier League players in the starting XI for Italy this evening, along with Arsenal midfielder Jorginho and Aston Villa forward Nicolò Zaniolo.
