A street artist has secretly put up a mural in Genoa next to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, depicting Gianluca Vialli with a Sampdoria jersey and the wings of an angel.

The former Blucerchiati striker died on January 6, five years after he was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

He also played for Cremonese, Juventus and Chelsea, but had the longest spell of his career at Sampdoria from 1984 to 1992.

It was there that he won the club’s one and only Serie A title, as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup, Coppa Italia, Italian Supercup and three editions of the Coppa Italia.

There have been numerous moving tributes to Vialli in the Marassi neighbourhood in Genoa, but this mural appeared overnight and was confirmed to be the work of secretive street artist Tiler.

Vialli is depicted in the Sampdoria jersey, with angel’s wings and halo atop his 1980s curls, right across the road from the arena.
