Gianluca Vialli believes the current Juventus have “superior quality” to his side which won the Champions League in 1996.

The former striker is the last Bianconeri captain to lift the trophy, as they’ve lost in the final five times since.

“For a few years I was pleased to be remembered as the captain who raised it for the last time,” Vialli told Gazzetta dello Sport.

The former striker is the last Bianconeri captain to lift the trophy, as they’ve lost in the final five times since.

“For a few years I was pleased to be remembered as the captain who raised it for the last time,” Vialli told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It was a beautiful image, every time I see it on TV I get chills. But then I saw these champions suffer too many times, it hurt me to see their faces after the last finals.

“So come on lads, take it now. Not least because this could be the right year. Juve are the strongest team in Europe, I’m not just talking about the starters but also the squad depth.

“Sometimes you look at the players they have on the bench and you’re amazed. The club did so well, they’ve added Cristiano Ronaldo to a structure that allowed them to win in Italy and to reach two Champions League finals in four years.

“Let’s just say the team 22 years ago had the merit of winning the Champions League, but in everything else this team has superior quality, simply because they can field one of the best players in the world.

“[Coach Max] Allegri has two teams at his disposal. [Marcello] Lippi had a granite block, we were solid, tactically prepared and at the peak of our powers.

“But Marcello didn’t have CR7…

“Now that Zidane isn’t working, Allegri is better than anyone. The results say that. We could talk about the many merits that he has, but I prefer to highlight the ability that Max has to transfer concepts to players on the fly.”

Vialli was also asked who he sees as the Old Lady’s rivals for the trophy.

“Barcelona. [Manchester] City also intrigue me a lot, but I think they lack something in terms of consistency.”
