Enrico Castellacci confirms Marco Verratti is out against Azerbaijan, allays Giorgio Chiellini concerns and details Dani Osvaldo and Thiago Motta injuries.

The chief medic of the Italian national team briefed the media on the eve of the Azzurri’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Azerbaijan, following an evening session at the Renzo Barbera.

The main headline from earlier was the double withdrawal from the camp of Osvaldo and Thiago Motta, with the Inter striker in particular now facing at least a month out.

“Osvaldo has felt a pull in the final few moments of the session and it was the same thing for Thiago Motta, who felt a bad adductor. It was a pretty obvious diagnosis,” Castellacci has revealed.

“The clinical examinations showed that there was a lesion to Osvaldo’s adductor, a strain between the first and second degree of the left adductor.

“Thiago Motta has a tendinitis on the insertion of the right adductor. Certainly, Thiago’s is a much lighter lesion, he should recover quickly.

“Osvaldo, though, will face a longer course of treatment. We have alerted the doctors at Inter and Paris Saint-Germain, sending them images of the scans.”

Marco Verratti has been training alone through the week in a bid to recover following his arrival to the team suffering with an ankle knock.

“Verratti has improved greatly. He did not work entirely with the team but we are optimistic for Monday. Tomorrow he is ruled out.

“And Chiellini left training early? That is nothing. Everything is good.”
