Marco Verratti has expressed his regret about not playing for Italy at San Siro when Croatia visits on Sunday night.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is out of contention after suffering from insertional tendinitis to his left groin.

After working separately from the rest of the group for two consecutive days, the medical staff decided that Verratti is not available to face Niko Kovac’s side on Sunday night, so sent him back to France.

“I am really sorry to leave now because I really wanted to be here with my teammates,” he told Vivo Azzurro today.

“I really valued to play against Croatia in the most important game of the qualifiers.

“But football is made of these things too and I’ll try to recover as soon as possible – now I’m heading back to France to heal.”
