There were a few surprises on the opening weekend of the new Serie A season but these Verona vs. Roma predictions suggest that normal service will resume this week.

Verona vs. Roma odds

1 – Roma to win – 10/11

2 – Under 2.5 goals scored – 4/6

3 – Both teams not to score – 3/4

4 – Andrea Belotti to score anytime – 12/5

5 – Roma to win to nil – 2/1

Hellas Verona only managed to stay in the top flight of Italian football last season by beating Spezia in a specially arranged play-off game. The Gialloblu had looked odds on for the drop before the final weeks of the campaign but just scraped through when it really mattered.

Marco Baroni’s side started this season off in the best possible way though, scoring the only goal against Empoli. That win alone will give the players some much-needed confidence, especially considering there were a number of notable absences because of injury and suspension.

The home fans in the Bentegodi will be as confident as ever that their side will earn three more points on Saturday. But Roma are usually difficult to break down and Verona needed to withstand a lot of pressure against Empoli. They may not be as fortunate this weekend.

Jose Mourinho has complained about his club’s inability to attract a new striker this summer, with Tammy Abraham misfiring last year – and now out for a long stretch of time. Duván Zapata is now having second thoughts about a move and the rumours surrounding Romelu Lukaku do not seem to hold much weight.

But does he need another forward at all? Andrea Belotti rolled back the years last weekend, scoring twice in the draw against Salernitana. Although the result would not have been what was expected, the former Torino striker showed why he has enjoyed such an incredible career. He could now extend his goal tally on Saturday.

Roma should be able to come away from Verona with all three points – but it won’t be a big win. Mourinho is always more than happy with a 1-0 victory anyway and that is exactly what could happen this weekend.

Verona team news

As happy as Marco Baroni would have been with the win last week, he could bring in a number of players for the home game against Roma. David Faraoni and Isak Hien could both return and Milan Djurić may well start further up the pitch. Finding out who is going to score the much-needed goals for Verona this season will be a top priority.

Roma team news

Jose Mourinho should keep faith with Andrea Belotti again for this one, after he bagged a brace against Salernitana. Paulo Dybala could well make a return up front too. The Portuguese manager will not have been quite as happy with his defensive unit in that game – and that could mean that we see Rick Karsdorp from the start.
