Juve and Inter are currently joint leaders at the summit of the Serie A table, with Lazio a further six points back in third place (and a game in hand), but Veron believes the title race will go to the wire.

“Antonio Conte is a guarantee, the team is intense, just like him. Those who say Inter play badly doesn’t understand anything about football,” Veron told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“If I must say someone, I still tip Juventus, they are still ahead, out of habit. But Inter and Lazio are doing well, they have the enthusiasm to hang in there until the end of the season."

Veron played alongside current Lazio coach Inzaghi two decades ago, so did Veron expect him to become a top tactician?

“To be honest, never, really, never. But we all mature in different ways. He has studied, and he didn’t improvise."

Veron then compared Conte to his old Lazio and Argentina teammate Diego Simeone.

“I think of Simeone when I see Conte, neither of the two were exactly skilful on the pitch, but they were essential and effective, they were already thinking like coaches.”
