The Belgian joined current club Barcelona from Arsenal two years ago but has struggled for game time during his stint at Camp Nou.
As such, he has been linked with a move away, with reports earlier on Friday that the 30-year-old had agreed he would move to Stadio Olimpico should the two clubs reach an agreement.
However, the Giallorossi boss stopped short of saying the defender would definitely be joining the club.

“Vermaelen is a player with experience and quality,” Spalletti said of the player to reporters. “He can build the play from the back and has great character.
“These players are used to playing important European matches. The talks are advanced even though for now I cannot say that it is done.”
