Jordan Veretout notes Ajax ‘like to play between the lines,’ so Roma closed the spaces and largely neutralised them in the Europa League quarter-final.

Ajax had 72 per cent possession, but the 1-1 draw and above all 2-1 first leg victory proved enough for the Giallorossi.

“We knew that Ajax were coming here to give their all for qualification. We did well defensively, can do more when attacking, but with this spirit of sacrifice and attitude, we can do great things,” Veretout told Sky Sport Italia.

“Ajax like to play between the lines, so the coach asked us to stay tight and not leave gaps. I think we did that well, as Ajax only really managed to cause problems down the flanks.”

Roma will face Manchester United in the semi-final of the Europa League, at Old Trafford on April 29 and the Olimpico on May 6.

“We’ve achieved qualification, which is very important for us, for the club and the fans, it’s a confidence-booster and we’re really pleased.

“We are a strong squad, we are all very happy with the victory and saw a strong attitude from the whole team. The coach gave everything from the touchline, he encouraged the team and is very helpful for us on the pitch.”
