New signing Joan Verdu calls Fiorentina a 'huge opportunity' and says he's 'ready to help the team'.

The 32-year-old Spaniard was the surprise last-minute signing for la Viola, and he was presented to the Press this morning.

“This is a huge opportunity for me, not a vindication,” he said. “My career wasn't finished, it was just at a different stage.

“I'll try and make the most of this chance and help out the team. We'd already been in touch in 2012 but they didn't come to anything.

“I'm in a team that wants to win now, and sooner or later the opportunities come.

“Physically I've always been fine, I understand that I come from a different football but I played many games in the Liga.

“I feel ready to help the team out.”

Verdun was likened to Hellas Verona's Luca Toni, another internationally mobile evergreen of the sport.

“I hope I can be like him. He came from my league too and he did well here.

“My personal objectives are at one with our collective ones. As for my role, I haven't discussed this with [Coach Paulo] Sousa, but I've played in a variety of formations.

“In the 4-2-3-1 I played as an offensive midfielder, and that's my best role.

“My favourite Italian players? I didn't have many chances to watch them when I was a child, but I like [Andrea] Pirlo and Giuseppe Rossi a lot.

“I played against the latter in Spain, he's a very strong player and people talked about him a lot.”
