Torino President Urbano Cairo says his club’s deadline-day deal for Simone Verdi is ‘a gift for myself, the Coach and the fans’.

Torino left it late to bring in Verdi from Napoli on Monday evening as the €25m transfer was signed off just minutes before the 21:00 BST cut-off point.

“I’m very happy, he was our first choice and we’d always wanted him,” Cairo told Tuttomercatoweb.

“We wanted to sign him earlier, but Napoli had to do other deals. I wanted to try in every possible way on deadline day. We started a marathon for him at midday.

You saw what we were capable of in Bergamo. We did very well and some important starters were missing, like N’Koulou.

“We had a great game, despite playing just three days before, We lost 3-2 to Wolves because they had more football in their legs.

“I’ve bought myself a gift and I also did it for the Coach and fans. We feared we’d miss out on him, but then we met Giuntoli and he was always in touch with his President.

“There was a chance of doing the deal and also restoring our relationship as clubs, like I have with De Laurentiis.”

Nicolas Nkoulou remains a Granata player, despite trying to engineer a move away before the deadline…

“I’ve said it already, he must get back to being the person we know,” concluded the patron.
