Venezia’s social media account vented their frustration – and sarcasm – after Luis Muriel’s controversial goal for Atalanta in the Coppa Italia was allowed despite a VAR check.

The Colombian broke the deadlock in today’s Round of 16 tie in Bergamo when controlling the cross with his chest, then sending a defender and the goalkeeper to ground with a dummy as he shifted it onto his left foot to tap into an empty net.

It was a lovely bit of skill, but the VAR took several minutes to view the footage carefully, as Muriel appeared to control the ball with his arm.

After several replays were examined, the verdict from VAR was that the goal would stand.

Venezia’s social media accounts did not hide their irritation at the decision, which was certainly borderline.

Initially, the tweet read: “Cool.”

It was then deleted and the picture made to speak for itself.

The top of the arm is still considered part of the shoulder and replays from different angles suggested the ball did also strike Muriel’s chest.
