Venezia director of sport Mattia Collauto confirms they ‘tried to sign Lucas Alario’ from Bayer Leverkusen in January.

The Lagunari have transformed their squad in the transfer window, bringing in several new players for coach Paolo Zanetti.

Newcomers include Jean-Pierre Nsame from Young Boys, out of contract Nani, Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Cuisance and Rapid Vienna left-back Maximilian Ullmann.

There could’ve been more, as Collauto told tuttoveneziasport.it that the Serie A club had made a bold proposition.

“We had tried to sign Alario, just as we tried for others, but you need certain situations to fall into place and that didn’t happen,” said Collauto.

“Our desire was not to leave it to the last minute, so we are happy with the transfer operations we completed. Now we’ll see how the team performs on the pitch.”

Striker Alario is an Argentina international with three goals in nine senior caps.

He has been at Bayer Leverkusen since leaving River Plate in 2017 and so far this season has contributed two goals in 17 competitive games.
