Matias Vecino has responded to being left out of the Lazio squad for the Coppa Italia by coach Maurizio Sarri over disciplinary reasons. ‘My conscience is clear.’

The Round of 16 kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico this evening at 20.00 GMT against Genoa.

Vecino is not included in the group after reports Sarri felt the Uruguay international did not show the right attitude coming off the bench against Cagliari.

The player gave his own version of events in an Instagram Stories post.

“I wanted to clear a few things up, seeing the news that I had to read today about me! First of all, I am sad not to be at the disposal of the squad for tonight’s important match, but I accept the decision that was made!

“It is important however to clarify that the reasons behind this decision are not to be found in the game with Cagliari or the training sessions!

“I have always been a sincere, direct person who says what he thinks, but I never disrespected anyone.

“My conscience is clear and I have the desire to get back as soon as possible to doing what I love the most. Forza Lazio”
