Former Palermo midfielder Franco Vazquez believes Italy “are at the same level” as Argentina as a call from Antonio Conte was enough to convince him.

Vazquez ended five years with Palermo when he joined Sevilla over the summer, but he made it clear his heart still belonged in Italy as he was proud to promote the fact he represented his motherland over his country of birth.

“The sensations are good [at Sevilla], but it couldn’t be otherwise, given the importance of this club,” he told El Correo.

“Sampaoli? He’s always told us to attack and enjoy our football. The Italian national team? I have dual nationality as always.

“My mother is from Padova. I play for Italy because Conte called me, and their national team are at the same level as that of Argentina, so I had to choose between two very strong national teams.

“My arrival at Sevilla? At the end of last season, I knew my adventure at Palermo was over.

“The club told me that I could leave and Sevilla came in for me after a little while.

“I really liked the idea of returning to La Liga. Monchi called me and convinced me, although it’s thanks to Maresca that I already knew so much about Sevilla.”
