The attacking midfielder played in the Viola’s recent friendly win over his former side, Universitario, and denied suggestions that he was abused by the club’s fans on his return to his homeland.

“The people were encouraging me and they behaved very well with me,” Vargas said. I didn’t hear any whistles but only applause.

“The truth is that everything is fine. At the end of the first half I heard favourable chanting towards me and I was very happy with that.

“I am training to the maximum in order to be in the best shape for the season.

“Against Universitario I saw great players that I think Fiorentina could take into consideration.

“I hope many [Peruvian players] can soon manage to go abroad so that they can improve further.”
