Edu Vargas admits he was “very upset” at making such a disappointing debut for Napoli. “My teammates told me not to worry.”

The Chilean arrived in a deal worth around €12m from Universidad during the January transfer window and was thrown in from the start in the Coppa Italia against Cesena.

However, he played only 45 minutes in which his defensive error gave Cesena the opening goal, though eventually the Partenopei won 2-1.

“I was very upset, as I never really got into the game,” he told Chilean media. “I will slowly adapt to this new football world and now can only wait for another opportunity to step on to the field.

“Unfortunately I made a mistake when I came back to help the defence. I tried to control the ball, but instead lost possession and that sparked the opposition goal. Fortunately the team managed to get back on top and win anyway.

“My teammates told me not to worry, because the debut in Italian football is never easy.”

Coach Walter Mazzarri took responsibility for the “mistake” of playing Vargas before he was ready.
