Tonight’s friendly between Italy and Germany will be another opportunity to test VAR – Video Assistant Referee – technology.
It kicks off at San Siro at 19.45 GMT.
There have been several European experiments for this new technology, the first of which was in Italy’s friendly against France back in August.
This system has two referees in a truck or special room within the stadium grounds viewing the video replays and should in theory then communicate with the official via radio.

“There has been important progress, it is evident, and now we need to optimise some aspects,” said referee Roberto Rosetti.
“We are working in a very productive way, but this does require knowledge, focus and a cool head. These are characteristics that Italian referees generally do have.
“I could also say that FIFA are paying a great deal of attention to what we are doing. The more time goes on, the more I am convinced that we can get important results from this project.
“Our objective, shared with the Lega Serie A and the FIGC, is to start using it in the Coppa Italia. The referees are happy and optimistic about this technology.
“Naturally the objective is to interfere as little as possible with the flow of the game, because we mustn’t change the beauty of the sport, but there are cases where VAR can be very helpful.”
