Inter fans are furious after VAR protocol was not followed in their 1-0 defeat to Parma for Federico Dimarco’s possible handling offence.
The incident occurred when Dimarco cleared an Ivan Perisic strike off the line, as it appeared to strike his elbow.
It was the kind of incident VAR was arguably created for, and yet referee Gianluca Manganiello didn’t even view the footage himself.
He simply trusted the verdict of VAR official Gianluca Rocchi and waved play on.

It was the kind of incident VAR was arguably created for, and yet referee Gianluca Manganiello didn’t even view the footage himself.
He simply trusted the verdict of VAR official Gianluca Rocchi and waved play on.
While some would argue the ball might’ve come off Dimarco’s leg first or even have been unintentional, the fact remains the referee should’ve viewed it before making his own decision.
Choosing to ignore the opportunity for an On Field Review is breaching VAR protocol, as the referee must always make the final decision.
Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic also complained that Dimarco – who could well have been sent off for that penalty incident earlier – was only able to score the winner because a Parma player in an offside position was blocking his view.
This too could’ve been viewed on VAR to decide whether the offside was active or passive.
It’s not just Inter who are unimpressed with Manganiello and the VAR officials, because in the opening three minutes Roberto Gagliardini lunged studs-up on Antonio Di Gaudio.
Manganiello did not even award a free kick, meaning he hadn’t seen the incident properly, making it another ideal candidate for VAR.
