VAR check and red card: what happened in chaotic end to Empoli vs. Sampdoria

Watch Omar Colley’s late equaliser disallowed by VAR in the stoppages of EmpoliSampdoria, which left Dejan Stankovic and his men furious.

The Blucerchiati thought they had scored a late equaliser at the Stadio Castellani through the Gambian defender, but referee Alberto Santoro disallowed it after a VAR check.

Manolo Gabbiadini unintentionally stopped the ball with his hand while falling to the floor after a challenge by Empoli defender Sebastiano Luperto. The incident led to Sampdoria’s goal and for this reason, it was eventually disallowed.

However, Luperto tangled up with Gabbiadini inside the box and according to DAZN referee pundit Luca Marelli, Samp’s goal should have been disallowed, but the Blucerchiati still deserved a penalty kick.

Stankovic was furious with the referee and did nothing to hide his frustration after the final whistle. The former midfielder allegedly shouted to the referee: ‘We are playing for our life.’

According to DAZN, Samp’s complaints continued inside the tunnel, where a staff member of the Blucerchiati was sent off.
