Robin Van Persie is a serious doubt for the Argentina-Netherlands semi-final with a stomach bug, confirmed Louis Van Gaal.

The World Cup semi-final kicks off on Wednesday at 21.00 UK time (20.00 GMT) in Sao Paulo, but RVP trained separately from the squad today.

“He has a stomach problem, an intestinal problem. I don't know if he will play,” said Van Gaal at a Press conference.

“I will decide tomorrow. Van Persie is our captain so he is very important to us. In principle my captain always plays, but he has to be fit.”

Nigel De Jong took part in training, fuelling belief the Milan midfielder could recover quicker than expected from a groin strain to still take part in this tournament.

“If his reaction is good and he can play, then the miracle can come true,” added Van Gaal said.
