Ajax director Edwin van der Sar admits he was stunned by how well Napoli played in the 6-1 result in Amsterdam. ‘They play extraordinary, quick football with no fear.”

It kicks off at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at 17.45 UK time (16.45 GMT).

“Napoli had a very good game in Amsterdam, but over the last three of four months they’ve played incredibly well,” former Juventus goalkeeper van der Sar told Sky Sport Italia.

“It is a difficult match for us in the Stadio Maradona, we’ll see how our players react to the defeat this evening on the pitch.

“Ajax rarely win against Italian clubs and Napoli play this extraordinary, quick football, with no fear, Kvaratskhelia is very attacking and dangerous. We played badly, made many mistakes and hope for a better performance, as you didn’t see the real Ajax in Amsterdam.”

Lorenzo Lucca became the first ever Italian to play for Ajax when he was poached from Serie B this summer, but is still waiting for his senior debut.

“He has played for the B team, he’s not just tall, he is good with his feet too and I think he can start to play more from this month.”

Ajax have been a little more active on the transfer market than usual, rather than just pumping out talents every year from the youth academy.

“Our academy is good, but it is not possible every year to sell seven players of the first XI and bring through the fresh talents so quickly. We’ve also had some injury issues, so we still have talents, but also had the opportunity to go on the market and bring in players who are ready to go straight into the main team.”
