Former Milan star Marco Van Basten was not impressed with Ajax following their embarrassing 6-1 Champions League loss to Napoli.

The Partenopei put on a dominant display at the Johan Cruyff Arena earlier this week, flying to a thrilling victory over their Dutch opponents in an electric fashion. Napoli’s win means that they already have one foot in the Round of 16 with three games left to play, a sign of their incredible start under Luciano Spalletti this season.

Speaking to Dutch media via TuttoNapoli, Van Basten was clearly unimpressed with Ajax’s performance and suggested that their painful defeat to Napoli couldn’t be justified.

“The result, 6-1, was a massacre, it’s unacceptable to be outclassed like that by Napoli, a good team, but that does not justify the hammering suffered.

“Incomprehensible the market that Ajax made, spending €100m in a strange and crazy way. Something is wrong.”

Napoli’s win was so dominant in Amsterdam on Tuesday that Ajax did not want to exchange shirts with their opponents after the match, refusing the gesture from the Partenopei kit-man following the full time whistle.

Spalletti’s side host Ajax at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Wednesday October 12 next week.
