The Dutch legend is one of the greatest players ever to wear the Rossoneri jersey and has periodically been linked with the job.

“I never turned down the Milan bench. I spoke two years ago with director Ariedo Braida, but it was only part of exploratory talks and nothing serious,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“I had to have ankle surgery and then nothing more came of it. Besides, I do not feel ready to be the Milan Coach.

“I am in charge of Heerenveen and want more time to improve myself. We’ll see in the future. The work of a Coach is different to that of a player, as he has to make players understand how to work together and it takes time to become a good manager.”

Van Basten was asked what he thought of the summer sales that saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva exit San Siro.

“It’s normal to have difficulties when players like that leave, so their position in mid-table is only to be expected.”

Today is the 25th anniversary of the game where Van Basten scored four goals against Goteborg.

“It was a wonderful night for me. I had also netted one earlier, but that was disallowed and I ended up getting another four. I have to thank all the players who allowed me to score these goals.”
