The Dutch club released a vague statement noting Van Basten will be away “unexpectedly longer than first expected.
“The Coach is struggling because of personal matters for some time with physical discomfort. These symptoms may be so severe that in the short term he is not able to competently carry out his work.
“Van Basten will miss this Saturday’s away match with FC Dordrecht. AZ sends Marco and his family strength.”
It’s not clear how long 49-year-old Van Basten will be away from the AZ bench for or what is causing these severe symptoms.
Italian media have suggested both cardiac problems and depression following the death of his father.
