Former Italy CT Roberto Donadoni believes there is no use looking for “scapegoats” but is confident “we’ll pull through” the World Cup playoffs.

Giampiero Ventura is feeling the heat after masterminding Italy to a 3-0 loss against Spain on Saturday, with a lot of the criticism concerning his decision to field a 4-2-4 formation.

“If we want, for once, to behave in a rational and righteous manner, we have to look at the causes of the results rather than the effects,” the Bologna boss told Il Giornale.

“To those who are doing everything they can to find scapegots, I ask them trivially: would it have been any different if the CT used a different formation? I really don’t think so.

“Complicated to qualify for the World Cup? Like usual. We’ve gone from the optimism leading up to the clash in Madrid to a grim pessimism for the future.

“A lot will depend on how good the team that we’ll face in the playoffs are in November, but we’ll pull through.

“And, here’s my hope – that Madrid will become a useful lesson for the entire set-up.”
