Understanding Leao’s future: from possible Milan renewal to Premier League interest

Milan may be desperate to tie down Rafael Leao but they face an uphill battle considering the interest from abroad.

Media reports today detailed how the Rossoneri are aware of the genuine interest in the 22-year-old Portuguese forward and so they’re hoping to lock him down with a new contract. The main obstacle now is his salary request; his agent Mendes is now pushing for a €5m plus add-ons salary, something which the Milanese club are unconvinced about.

Milan will have to decide fast, however, as there’s serious interest from abroad for Leao. Premier League sides Manchester City and Newcastle United are both keen to pick him up, putting the Rossoneri in a tough spot.

Leao’s renewal depends on whether or not Bahraini investment fund Investcorp complete their takeover of the club. Should this go through, the club will easily have enough to afford his new request. Recent rumours suggest executive president Mohammed Bin Mahfoodh Al Ardhi wants to make Leao a symbol of the club for years to come.
