Dejan Kulusevski’s future with Tottenham Hotspur has been called into question after a mixture of reports in the UK and in Italy have detailed contrasting stories surrounding the North Londoners’ option to buy clause in the Swede’s loan deal from Juventus

The 23-year-old joined Spurs from the Bianconeri on an initial 18-month loan in January 2022, which included an obligation to purchase if certain conditions were met over Kulusevski’s year-and-a-half stint at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

According to PA, later reported in the Independent, Kulusevski is expected to make his Tottenham switch permanent for a fee of €35m in the summer once the 2022-23 season has drawn to a close.

Tottenham’s option to buy Kulusevski from Juve becomes an obligation in the event that they qualify for the Champions League, however that feat is now mathematically impossible given that Antonio Conte’s former side currently sit in sixth, nine points outside the top four with just two games to go.

Contrary to the recent stories in the UK, La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote on Sunday morning that it is “not at all obvious” that Spurs will take up the option to buy Kulusevski from Juventus.

The paper reminded readers that the Swede was brought in by Fabio Paratici while Conte was still at the helm, neither of whom are still on Tottenham’s books.

There have been suggestions that Tottenham and Juve could look to negotiate a new set of terms for Kulusevski’s transfer, presumably for a reduced fee, but if they are unable to reach an agreement, the Swedish international will likely return to Turin to be put up for sale to other interested parties.
