The situation is in turmoil, as while Italy moves into Phase Two of the coronavirus pandemic response from May 4, professional teams will not be allowed to train until May 18.

The Lega Serie A and particularly Lazio were furious about this, insisting they were promised that training could resume for them as well as individual sports from May 4.

“The Government never set a date,” Coaches Association President Ulivieri told Lady Radio today.

“Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora cannot set a date without support from the coaches. The Minister did not specify any date in our meeting, so the Lega Serie A is not telling the truth. Nothing had been promised to us.”

The medical protocol put forward by the FIGC was considered ‘insufficient’ by the Government, so will need to be adjusted.

Meanwhile, time is running out to get Serie A back on track and May 18 has become the latest date to start training or abandon the season altogether.

“We have always been prepared to resume, but only if everyone who works in and around the sport is protected,” continued Ulivieri.

“I tell the players and everyone else that we cannot just behave as if nothing had happened. We mustn’t off the idea that football is privileged compared to the general population, nor that the Government wants to block football. We just have to see how things develop.”
