Coaches’ Association President Renzo Ulivieri welcomes the ‘positive’ decision to introduce five substitutions during the post-pandemic games.

FIFA proposed the idea, which was backed by the IFAB, as major European leagues aim to take up the option when the season resumes.

Coaches’ Association President Renzo Ulivieri welcomes the ‘positive’ decision to introduce five substitutions during the post-pandemic games.

FIFA proposed the idea, which was backed by the IFAB, as major European leagues aim to take up the option when the season resumes.

“It seems to me a positive change and the right thing to do in a moment like this,” Ulivieri told Tuttomercatoweb.

“It gives coaches the chance to make the most of the whole squad. There could also be more physical problems during games in this scenario, so it’s a solution that certainly lends a helping hand.

“If someone doesn’t want to make all three changes, it’s not obligatory. It’s also positive that the substitutions can be performed only in three timeslots.”

With games set to be played in June, July and even August, everyone is seeking ways to make the game safer for all concerned.

There is also the possibility that VAR will be suspended for the rest of the 2019-20 season, due to the technical difficulties of ensuring COVID-19 protection in the booth.

“If we are able to use VAR, then that’s good, but we won’t call on it if this becomes something dangerous. After all, we did without VAR until so recently, we won’t die if it’s taken away. This is a difficult moment and we have to make do.”
