Juventus were dire for much of the semi-final with Sevilla, but Federico Gatti snatched a last-gasp equaliser from a corner to keep this Europa League tie in the balance.

Gleison Bremer and Mattia De Sciglio were out injured and Federico Chiesa benched, while Sevilla missed Suso, Tanguy Nianzou, Joan Jordan, Marcao and cup-tied Pape Gueye. However, Lucas Ocampos and Yassine Bounou returned for the side that won this competition six times and eliminated Manchester United in the quarter-finals, with Erik Lamela only ready for the bench.

Filip Kostic pulled an angled drive across the face of goal from a promising position, but Ocampos went closer on a corner, forcing a tricky Wojciech Szczesny save from point-blank range.

Dusan Vlahovic missed an open goal on 19 minutes, as Bounou only flapped at a Kostic roll across, but the striker was put off and incredibly ballooned over the net from close range.

That proved costly, because soon after Sevilla took the lead when Bryan Gil’s cross-field pass sent Ocampos down the right, rolling across to find Youssef En-Nesyri in acres of space to sweep in with the inside of the boot from 12 yards relatively undisturbed.

En-Nesyri risked another on the counter only for a heavy touch to allow the Szczesny save, then the Spaniards lost Ocampos to injury.

Szczesny flew to fingertip the Ivan Rakitic scorcher over the bar and in first half stoppages En-Nesyri skimmed the upright from distance, as Juve were jeered off the field at the break.

Max Allegri had to change something, so threw on Federico Chiesa and Samuel Iling-Junior to bring pace and attacking threat on the wings, moving to a 4-4-2.

Chiesa just failed to get control of a quick free kick floated over the top, then Iling-Junior got into the box with a nutmeg only to roll across for Vlahovic rather than go for goal himself.

Juve and the crowd were getting increasingly frustrated by the referee’s refusal to book Sevilla for systematic fouling. Leonardo Bonucci’s 500th appearance in the Bianconeri jersey ended early, as he limped off with a groin injury.

Adrien Rabiot had penalty appeals when he went to volley a cross and Bade caught him on the ankle, but the referee and VAR felt there was something on the ball.

With the last kick of the game, Juve were allowed to take a corner that Paul Pogba nodded back from the far post for Federico Gatti to head in from point-blank range, anticipating Arkadiusz Milik. It could still prove all the difference for Juve in the Europa League.
