UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin sent out a letter to all 55 Federations setting a deadline for May 25 to communicate “the planned restart of domestic competitions, including date and format.”
Ligue 1 announced today that they were terminating the 2019-20 season early, as no games will be allowed even behind closed doors in France until September.
The Netherlands and Belgium have already called an end to their campaigns, while Serie A, the Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga are also debating what to do next.
“National Associations and/or Leagues should be in a position to communicate to UEFA by 25 May 2020 the planned restart of their domestic competitions including the date of restart and the relevant competition format,” Ceferin wrote, according to news agency Reuters.
“In the event that a domestic competition is to be prematurely terminated for legitimate reasons… UEFA would require the National Association to explain by 25 May 2020 the special circumstances justifying such premature termination and to select clubs for the UEFA club competitions 2020/21 on the basis of sporting merit in the 2019/20 domestic competitions.”
The aim is to get domestic tournaments completed by August 2, then reserving the rest of that month to complete the Champions League and Europa League.
If seasons are finished early, there is the question of who gets the title, places in Europe and relegation.
