The New York Times suggests UEFA are seriously considering changing the Champions League format to create a closing week of semi-finals and Final in one city.

This would be a slightly smaller version of the Final Eight tournament we saw played in Lisbon last summer.

That was organised out of necessity because travel was restricted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the fixture lists crammed together following a long suspension of activity.

This idea would be not dissimilar, but rather than the final eight, it’d be the last four teams all playing in one city over the course of a Champions League week.

Last season’s experiment provided thrilling games and focused the viewing public with massive television audience figures.

According to the NYT, UEFA are preparing to unveil their plans to change the format for the final stages of the Champions League.

It would include two winner-take-all semi-finals, replacing the home and away format, followed by the Final, all of them in one city.

It comes after reports that UEFA were ready to scrap the away goals rule.

The Champions League week would also be padded out with concerts, legends games and a youth final, all in the host city, culminating in a Final on Saturday night.
