Cristiano Giaretta has urged Udinese fans to understand and support the team, as he makes clear the ‘confidence’ in keeping Antonio Di Natale next year.

Di Natale has announced his intention to retire from the game at the end of the season, but the Zebrette have latched on to a recent comment that he may indeed reconsider.

“We have not yet talked again, but we are convinced that next year Toto will our captain, our striker,” sporting director Giaretta has reiterated to Calcionews24 today.

“He is an important objective and we are sure that we will not let someone like him leave, we are confident.”

Udinese owner Giampaolo Pozzo hit out at the club’s fans for booing the team on Sunday against Atalanta.

“Against Atalanta we played a difficult game, but we could not continue at a high level after six games in the Coppa Italia and the League.

“We are working already towards the next game at Cagliari and we can play a great game. It is clear that there was some grumbling, some boos in the field, and we did not enjoy this.

“The fans have the right to express their dissent when they do not appreciate what they see, but I ask for understanding because this is a difficult year for us.

“The boys and the Coach are giving their all and if we have the strength to support them then it would be much better in the end.”

Giaretta has just agreed a 12-month extension to his own contract at Udinese, to commit him through to the end of next season.

“I am very pleased and proud to continue my journey with Udinese because I feel very fortunate to work with one of the most important clubs in Italy, who are much appreciated in Europe.”
