Milan’s Champions League campaign is now hanging by a thread after a 3-0 defeat away to Gianluigi Donnarumma’s PSG, as Kylian Mbappé, Randal Kolo Muani and Kang-in Lee were clinical.

This had become a crucial showdown for qualification, as Newcastle United were top of the group. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Noah Okafor, Samuel Chukwueze and Ismael Bennacer were out, but Rade Krunic and Pierre Kalulu had their first starts after over a month out injured. Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez also returned from suspension against Juventus. PSG missed Marco Asensio, Presnel Kimpembe and Nuno Mendes, but it was the first time Gianluigi Donnarumma faced his former club.

Just days after he was sent off against Juventus, Malick Thiaw received a yellow card four minutes in for dragging back Randal Kolo Muani.

However, the Rossoneri did take the initiative and forced a series of corners, Rafael Leao curling wide after an Olivier Giroud back-heel flick.

Kylian Mbappé flashed a shot wide from distance, but he opened the scoring. Warren Zaire-Emery turned Tijjani Reijnders to feed Mbappé, who cut inside Fikayo Tomori and disguised the finish at the near post, wrong-footing Maignan.

Davide Calabria replaced Thiaw at half-time and PSG had the ball in the net with Ousmane Dembele straight after the restart, but it was disallowed after a VAR review for Manuel Ugarte barging Yunus Musah off the ball in the build-up.

Moments later, Milan should’ve scored when a long Maignan ball launched Pulisic, but he tried to roll it across for Giroud rather than go for goal himself and the angle was too narrow.

Instead, PSG did double their lead when a corner was taken short for Dembele, Maignan got down quickly to palm away the angled drive, but only as far as Kolo Muani. The Milan defenders were not alert enough to react.

Maignan kept the scoreline down after Mbappé cut inside Calabria on the counter-attack, while Donnarumma was right behind the Pulisic strike and Leao curled well wide.

Giroud spotted Donnarumma off his line and tried the lob, but the Italian got back in time to pluck it out of the air.

Achraf Hakimi and Donnarumma combined to push the Leao finish wide of the near post from close range after a good Pulisic run.

Yacine Adli’s introduction sparked a little more life into Milan and Giroud’s header was smothered by Donnarumma, but Maignan also fingertipped an Mbappé angled drive onto the far post after a sweeping counter-attack.

PSG added a third late on when Zaire-Emery burst down the right, rolled across through a dummy and Kang-in Lee was ready to sweep in relatively undisturbed.
