Lazio are out of the Champions League after fumbling a first leg lead in this 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, as Harry Kane ended his knockout round drought with a brace around the Thomas Muller header.

Ciro Immobile’s penalty won the first leg 1-0 and Dayot Upamecano’s red card saw him suspended here, along with injured Kingsley Coman and Bouna Sarr, while Serge Gnabry was only fit for the bench. However, Kim Min-jae was surprisingly dropped in favour of Eric Dier. The Aquile left behind Gil Patric and Nicolò Rovella, but Matias Vecino and Mattia Zaccagni were fit to start.

Mario Gila made a decisive early block on Jamal Musiala following a strong Leroy Sane run from midfield, then the same player’s curler was beaten away by Ivan Provedel.

Harry Kane’s strike was deflected wide, while Musiala and Raphael Guerreiro had shots charged down in the same move by Gila and Adam Marusic.

Yet Immobile had a huge opportunity to double Lazio’s lead on aggregate when a Zaccagni cross was deflected and his diving free header went wide of the far post totally undisturbed.

Moments later, Bayern Munich scored instead to level the tie. It was a chaotic goal, as Guerreiro had completely scuffed the half-volley on a Thomas Muller header back, it turned into an accidental assist for the Harry Kane header and Provedel got a hand to it, but not enough to keep it out of the far bottom corner. The England international had not scored a Champions League knockout goal for five years.

Musiala threatened to get a second a couple of minutes after that, at full stretch prodding inches wide after a well-worked move down the right.

Bayern did get a second with the last kick of the first half. A corner came to Matthijs de Ligt, whose volley was going wide until Muller redirected it with his head from six yards. The forward was kept onside by Felipe Anderson, who was late pushing back up.

De Ligt made an important block on the Immobile volley and Guendouzi deflected the Musiala curler just wide, while Guerreiro couldn’t keep his angled drive on target.

Bayern Munich started to keep possession for long periods and at the end of one of these spells, Provedel could only parry the Sane strike with Kane quickest to react on the rebound.

The Germans almost added a fourth, as first Muller saw his strike fingertipped onto the upright by Provedel, then Sane’s effort was inches wide.

Luis Alberto saw a very promising curler deflected off target by Aleksandar Pavlovic, but they ultimately made little impact in Munich.
