Portugal joined them today with their 3-0 victory against Switzerland.

That means they top Group D with a 100 per cent record and will be the opponents for Italy in the first knockout round of the competition.

England needed to beat Croatia by two clear goals to go through in second place in Group D, but a stoppage-time strike means they only managed a 2-1 result.

The other quarter-finals in late May will be Spain v Croatia, Denmark v Germany and Netherlands v France.
