France beat Norway 1-0 this evening, so Italy know what they must do to reach the quarter-finals of the European Under-21 Championship.

The Azzurrini lost the opener 2-1 to France in controversial circumstances after a last-gasp equaliser was not spotted due to the lack of VAR and goal-line technology.

They got back on track today with a 3-2 victory against Switzerland, which put them joint second in the group on three points with the Swiss.

The top two from each group go through and France have practically secured qualification with their 1-0 win against Norway, putting them on six points.

If two sides are tied on points, then the first decisive factor is their head-to-head record and Italy have the advantage here with the 3-2 result against Switzerland.

So as long as Italy match or improve upon Switzerland’s result in the final games on Wednesday evening, they will qualify for the next phase.

Switzerland face France, while Italy take on Norway.

There is still the possibility that if Italy lose to Norway and France beat Switzerland, all three teams will be on three points.

Then, it would be a mini-table of head-to-head records, followed by goal difference, then goals scored and ultimately if they are still tied down to disciplinary points.

As things stand, France have a goal difference of +2, Italy and Switzerland 0 and Norway -2.
