U21: Di Biagio experiments

Gigi Di Biagio said he “performed some experiments” with Italy Under-21 players in their friendly test.

The Azzurrini are preparing for the European Championships and will name the final 23-man squad later this afternoon.

They won 1-0 against Inter Berretti thanks to Marcello Trotta of Avellino after just seven minutes.

The entire side changed for the second half, as they tested both the 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 systems.

“I got the response I wanted from the training sessions, not so much this game,” said Coach Di Biagio.

“These were four important days in which we were able to train and work together. Of course we need to improve, clearly, but everyone gave 100 per cent and that created some doubts in my mind on who to leave out.

“I had to perform some tactical experiments, like trying Andrea Belotti external in a trident. We have one fundamental basic, which is the four-man defence, then must be able to adapt even during a game.

“Obviously our legs were heavy in this game due to the four days of intensive training to prepare us for the tournament, but that isn’t a problem now.

“The objective of this training camp also was to get those who hadn’t played as much up to full fitness levels.”

Italy will fly out to the Czech Republic on Monday June 15.
