Italy lost 1-0 to Ukraine in the semi-finals, setting up a third-place playoff with Ecuador, who in term were beaten by South Korea.
With little to write home about after 90 minutes, the game went into extra time and substitute Marco Olivieri blew his lines from the penalty spot.
That was followed by Richard Mina coming off the bench to score an 104th-minute winner for the Tricolor.
