Italy finished second in their group behind Portugal, eliminating Poland and hosts Malta.
Spain topped their group ahead of Norway, Iceland and Greece.
The Azzurrini started with a 4-0 hammering of Malta, then lost 5-1 to Portugal before a 1-1 draw with Poland.
Their semi-final opponents Spain defeated Iceland 2-1, Greece 5-0 and drew 0-0 with Norway this evening.
