The Spaniard, who will leave Chelsea this summer, has been targeted by the Azzurri who are looking to replace Walter Mazzarri.

Benitez’s agent Garcia Manuel Quillon yesterday met with Italian officials at the Rome HQ of FilmAuro, the movie production company owned by Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis.

The Gazzetta dello Sport and the Corriere dello Sport are both reporting that an agreement was reached.

Benitez will sign a two-year contract worth €3.5m a season at the Stadio San Paolo for a club who will take part in the Champions League next term.

The 53-year-old, who has bossed the likes of Valencia and Liverpool, has also had a brief spell in Serie A with Inter.

He succeeded Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2010, but he was replaced by Leonardo on Christmas Eve six months later.
