Il Corriere dello Sport claims Francesco Acerbi and Domenico Berardi will return to the Italy squad, while Davide Frattesi, Lorenzo Pellegrini Federico Chiesa and Mateo Retegui are in doubt due to injuries.
Luciano Spalletti will name his second Italy squad today, Friday, October 6 and according to Il Corriere dello Sport, both Acerbi and Berardi, two Euro 2020 winners, will return to the team.
Acerbi was injured in September, while Berardi had not played for Sassuolo as he had been pushing to join Juventus in the summer transfer window.
Friday’s printed edition of Il Corriere dello Sport (page 17) reports Spalletti could call 26-27 players for the October break plus eight/ten ‘reserves’ which can be included in the team later on if there are injuries or suspensions.
It is still unsure that Frattesi, Roma‘s Pellegrini, Chiesa and Retegui will be included in Spalletti’s squad as they are all at risk of missing the upcoming Serie A game too.
Spalletti is not expected to change goalkeepers, sticking to Gigio Donnarumma, Guglielmo Vicario, Ivan Provedel and Alex Meret.
Six defenders seem to have a guaranteed spot: Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Giorgio Scalvini, Alessandro Bastoni, Federico Dimarco, Francesco Acerbi and Gianluca Mancini. According to the report, Udogie also has a chance to be called up.
In central midfield Bryan Cristante, Manuel Locatelli, Nicolò Barella and Sandro Tonali will surely make the squad.
Giacomo Raspadori, Nicolò Zaniolo, Mattia Zaccagni and Matteo Politano will be called up by Mancini. Ciro Immobile should be included in the team too despite a bad run of form. Chiesa, Retegui and Gianluca Scamacca must be assessed while Wilfried Gnonto is injured.
Italy will face Malta on October 14 and England at Wembley Stadium on October 17 in two key Euro 2024 qualifying fixtures.
