Turkey hadn’t scored in their first two games, but are now in a position to qualify as one of the better third-placed teams after crushing the Czech Republic.

The Czechs needed a victory to progress as one of the best third-placed teams, whereas Turkey had to win by two clear goals to have any hope after a dismal start to the tournament.

Turkey took the lead after just 10 minutes, Emre Mor allowed to sprint down the right unmarked and pull back for Burak Yilmaz to blast into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

The Czech Republic fought back, but Tomas Sivok saw his header thump the base of the upright and Pavel Kaderabek turned just wide from close range.

Jaroslav Plasil’s screamer from distance was palmed out from under the bar and after the restart Volkan Bobacan got away with some comedy goalkeeping, then smothered Vladimir Darida’s effort.

Emre Mor horribly wasted a counter by firing over when he had two teammates to pass to. Nonetheless, Turkey did double their lead when a free kick was knocked down for Ozan Tufan to blast into the near top corner, but Petr Cech was caught out.

Darida tested the goalkeeper twice, while Olcay Sahan skimmed the target.
