Igor Tudor explains why Verona were ‘good, but not enough to get points’ in a 2-0 defeat to Juventus. ‘Dusan Vlahovic brings character as well as quality.’

Hellas were missing several key players, including Giovanni Simeone, Gianluca Caprari and Marco Davide Faraoni.

They nonetheless had plenty of the ball in Turin and took the game to Juve, but were beaten by clinical finishing from Vlahovic and Denis Zakaria, both on their Bianconeri debuts.

“We played well, but unfortunately that’s not enough to get points here. We need a great performance and for Juve to be on a bad day,” Tudor told DAZN.

“So it was a good performance, but not great. We made two mistakes on the goals, then Vlahovic showed his quality to run forward onto it.”

Wojciech Szczesny did make a couple of saves, but not many considering the amount of possession Hellas had.

“Where we were lacking was upfront, we didn’t have the shots or create the chances we usually do. Juve were also very focused in defence, determined not to concede.

“We did miss some of our attacking players, as we were organised, but lacking something upfront.”

Tudor was at Juventus as assistant manager to Andrea Pirlo last season, so did he see a different team now?

“Juve have a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Vlahovic doesn’t just bring quality, he also has character and that helps the others to step up too. I think he’s a truly important signing for Juventus.”

The Croatian coach always takes the game to his opponents and explained what his tactical credo is at Hellas Verona, building on the team left by Ivan Juric.

“I spoke to Juric and then dived in with this style of football. That was how the team worked, I added a few things, but if it works, you should accept it.

“We do take risks, but I firmly believe if we continue like this all year, we get more points. We earn more than we lose by taking those risks, for example winning back the ball higher up the pitch with a high press.”
