Giovanni Trapattoni warns that Milan can’t afford to lose to Sampdoria on Sunday night, as it would kill off their European hopes.

The Rossoneri have been boosted by the qualification of Lazio and Juventus for the Coppa Italia final, meaning sixth place will almost certainly be good enough for the Europa League.

“When there are decisive games for goals, like getting close to the Europa League, as with Milan and Sampdoria, you tend to be more attentive and take less risks,” Trapattoni told MilanNews.

“Milan and Sampdoria are in a position that will make them think about that, waiting.

“The Rossoneri, if they lost, would fall out of contention for the Europa League, and so I think they’ll have a cautious attitude, with meticulous attention.

“The situation at Milan is that they have to get three points, even if they don’t play well. At this point, it’s the results you need, the performances can come later.”

Current Coach Filippo Inzaghi looks likely to leave at the end of the season, and il Trap has some thoughts over who should take over – and it doesn’t include himself!

“[Vincenzo] Montella and [Antonio] Conte are big names, they know our League and they’ve shown they have value and experience.

“We have so many good Coaches, also big internationally-recognised names like [Marcello] Lippi and [Fabio] Capello, but obviously some of them have no intention of leaving their current position.

“Coaches like [Cesare] Prandelli and Conte, for example, would know how to change Milan.

“Me? I know that call would never come, I’m not going to start propaganda. I’ve had several major teams after me, but for the moment everything is in stand-by.

“I guess I’d say, before any proposal, that I refuse… unless [President Silvio] Berlusconi and [joint-CEO Adriano] Galliani go mad and call me!”
