Giovanni Trapattoni believes Roberto Mancini “deserves” to be the new Italy Coach and can see Maurizio Sarri in the Premier League.

Still without a CT since Giampiero Ventura was fired in November, the Azzurri seem on the verge of signing Mancini later this month.

“He trained champions and accumulated a lot of international experience at club level. It’s a position that honours him, but also one that he deserves,” Trap told RMC Sport.

Trapattoni was with the Nazionale from 2000 to 2004, but also worked as Coach for the Republic of Ireland side from 2008 to 2013.

“Unfortunately, the key to being a good Italy CT is to be fairly detached from the club colours and to select those players who are also very good at uniting a group. Italy is one nation, Garibaldi did everything to unite us, but it is still very divided between South, Centre and North.

“Having said that, we do have a lot of quality and can achieve a great deal in football. Our teams are competitive and we always manage to get the best from our players.”

Meanwhile, Trap was also asked about reports Napoli boss Sarri is on his way to Chelsea as a replacement for Antonio Conte.

“Sarri has enough experience and knowledge to understand within 15 days how English football is played.”
